Scientific research cloud Helix Nebula is now being supported by the GANT network.

GANT is the pan-European network that supports Europe's National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) and interconnects over 40 million users. It is co-funded by the European Commission.

GANT said it saw Helix Nebula, which is supported by a number of commerical IT suppliers, as an "important strategic step as it strives to become more inclusive and further boost collaboration".

DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe) is the organisation which on behalf of Europe's NRENs has built and operates the GANT network.

In a joint statement, Matthew Scott and Niels Hersoug, joint general managers of DANTE, said, "GANT has joined the Helix Nebula partnership in order to take an active role in the development of what we consider the natural solution for cloud computing in Europe. GANT is a key element in continuing our leadership in enabling researchers worldwide to collaborate."

Earlier this month CERN said it would be using a new remote data centre in Hungary, supported by GANT, to process and store data from its Large Hadron Collider (LHC) project, which is seeking to discover how the universe was formed.

CERN's data centre in Budapest is being served by GANT's terabit network and is being hosted by the Wigner Research Centre for Physics.
